John Bauer was a Swedish painter and illustrator who lived at the turn of the 20th century. He painted scenery, mythological scenes, but also portraits. His most prominent work, however, were the illustrations he did for the early editions of ‘Among Gnomes and Trolls’, an anthology of Swedish fairy tales and folklore. Bauer belonged to the generation of artists who commenced their careers before the dawn of modernism, so his paintings are heavily influenced by the romanticisation of Nordic folklore that was common at this time.
